Summary of the Article
The article is about a Spanish book that features a fictional character in a Muslim society. One key thing to note, though, is that the women aren't all that suppressed by society. In fact, it is said that the women chooses to exercise her life by her choosing. Although women still do face restrictions while behind the wheel and in terms of garments, some women don't believe it is the working of Muslim ideology. In fact, some choose to wear it as a tradition that has been passed down for several generations. Some even wear it for a sense of anonymity. Whatever the case, this book was meant to convey the status of Yemeni women for Westerners.
Thoughts, Emotions, and Observations about the Article
I thought this article was interesting because I did not know that Yemeni women chose to endure the restrictions and the standards of Muslim ideology. Some women actually enjoy its customs and desire to continue it due to their own traditions and customs. It shows how women can still face injustice in stereotypical societies but also have their own freedoms and rights.
How This Relates to Culture
The practice of wearing a hijab, for instance, is not only part of Yemeni religion of Muslim, but also a tradition and a custom for Yemeni women. It is important because it creates stereotypical sayings and other discriminating ideas.
