Summary of the Article
This article is about a speech given by Bradley B. Roberts, the National Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party. The speech is about Robert's view of the former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham. He explains that Ingraham dismisses democracy by being a hypocrite and giving false hopes to the public. For instance, he said that Ingraham intended to hold a referendum on Web Shop gaming if a political group won the electoral electing. He even convinced the Bahamian people that there would no longer be horse racing bets; however, the government had in their possession a Computer Wager Licensing Regulation. A referendum is for the will of the people; however, Ingraham dismissed such an action, which takes away the will of the people and goes against democracy.
Thoughts, Comments, and Emotions
The article shocked me in that I thought there would be no corruption or at least a bit of corruption in The Bahamas. I have always deemed it as a place for relaxation and a place where government would not create issues. Seeing that the former PM had done such an action made me second-guess myself. Corruption exists in one way or another; no country is perfect in terms of government.
Article's Relation to Politics
This relates to politics in that it shows the government's corruption. The Bahamas is supposed to be a democratic country, yet Ingraham's actions goes against the views of democracy. It shows its lack of efficiency in dealing with gambling problems by doing nothing at all. Referendums and plebiscites are for the will of the people, the hallmark of democracy.
